Now, while continuing her ministry, Leslie is expanding her worldview and strengthening her foundation for future graduate studies, all through a flexible, fully online format that fits her life.
Meet Leslie Frietch
What initially made you apply to this program?
I applied to the online BA in Religious Studies program because I was seeking a deeper understanding of other religious beliefs as they relate to my faith and ministry. As a pastor in the United Methodist Church, I wanted to enrich my knowledge not only for preaching and teaching, but also to better serve the spiritual needs of others. This program seemed like the perfect opportunity to combine academic rigor with personal spiritual growth.
How has your experience as a pastor in the United Methodist Church helped you in the online BA in Religious Studies?
My ministry experience gave me a strong foundation in practical theology, which complemented the academic aspects of the program. I was often able to draw from real-life ministry situations to bring depth to classroom discussions. It also helped me appreciate the relevance of what we were learning as I could immediately apply those insights in my ministry.
What was your favorite course or topic? Why?
I truly enjoyed all the topics throughout the program, but I was especially drawn to the courses on world religions—particularly African Religions and Asian Religions. Exploring these traditions broadened my understanding of how people around the world seek meaning, purpose, and connection with the divine. I believe that in order to come fully into your own beliefs, it's important to understand, respect and appreciate the beliefs of others. These courses challenged me to think more deeply and compassionately, and they ultimately strengthened my own faith by giving me a wider lens through which to view spirituality.
How did the program prepare you for your career or career advancement?
The program sharpened my critical thinking, writing, and theological reflection skills—tools that are essential in ministry and leadership. It also broadened my understanding of world religions and interfaith dynamics, which is increasingly important in today's diverse communities. I now feel more equipped to lead, teach, and engage with both church members and those outside the church in meaningful ways.
How has the program impacted your personal and professional life?
Personally, this program deepened my spiritual journey and gave me new ways of understanding God's work in the world. Professionally, it has increased my confidence as a pastor. I've found that I approach sermons, Bible studies, and pastoral conversations with greater clarity and theological depth.
How do you see yourself using your degree in the future?
I see myself continuing in pastoral ministry, but I also plan to attend graduate school. This degree has laid a strong foundation for both my current work and my future studies. I hope to use what I've learned to support leadership development within the church, especially for those just beginning to discern their call, and to grow in my capacity to teach, preach, and serve with greater depth and understanding.
Is there anything else you'd like us to know?
I'm incredibly grateful for the faculty and the supportive community within the program. This journey has not only been an academic one—it has been truly transformative. One of the most enriching aspects was the opportunity to engage with a diverse range of cultural and religious perspectives. I believe that experiencing this kind of diversity enhances one's own faith journey, helping us to appreciate the beliefs of others and relate to them more fully. It deepens compassion, broadens understanding, and ultimately strengthens personal conviction. I would encourage anyone who is standing on the edge, wondering if they should take the step of faith, to do so. If you're feeling a call to deepen your understanding of faith and ministry, this program offers both the knowledge and the spiritual growth to help you walk that path with confidence.
