“LSUA Has Made It So Easy to Achieve My Goals"

How the Online LSUA Accounting Degree Supported One Student on Her Career Path
In San Angelo, TX, Mariah Davis works full-time as a senior associate at a local accounting firm and volunteers in her community. Yet she still managed to make her mark in the online Bachelor of Science in Accounting program through LSU Alexandria (LSUA). Her secret? Structure, self-care, and a belief that it's never too late to achieve your goals.
She didn't let the demands of a busy work schedule or the intensity of tax season stand in the way of her education. Instead, she leaned on her natural knack for organization and the consistent support from LSUA faculty to succeed in her program. She did so well that she's already considering an MBA from LSU!

Meet Mariah Davis
How did you balance life, work, and studies?
I work full-time, so I try to stick to a schedule with my studies. I always plan out my week on not only what days I will be working on schoolwork but also what days I will take a break. I also volunteer in the community, so I try to make sure I always make time for that. It really is all about time management and planning out my week.
What were your biggest challenges, and how did you overcome them?
My biggest challenge is staying motivated with my schoolwork during my busy season (tax season) at work. I overcome this by making time for self-care and again sticking to a schedule. I love reading psychological thrillers, knitting, and watching TV with my husband. So, I always try to take time for that, and it helps me not feel like I am just working and going to school non-stop. It helps me keep things in perspective and remember why I work so hard.
Can you share a specific example of how you applied what you learned?
Right now, I work at an accounting firm in San Angelo, TX (called ORW). I am a senior associate in the accounting services department. I work with many clients preparing their books for their tax returns, processing their payroll, and other accounting needs. Everything I have learned has helped me with my work for my clients. However, this semester, I have been taking Tax Accounting 1 and 2; this has helped me understand how my work helps the tax department. However, it also will help me feel more confident in moving forward with my career and possibly processing tax returns in the future.
What did you appreciate most about the faculty and support services?
I really like that all the accounting courses I have taken are structured in a similar way. It helped me feel confident in my work, and I always knew what to expect. I also really appreciated the Zoom meetings, where we reviewed any projects or exam reviews. With all my courses and professors, I could always contact them with any questions or needs. Professor McClure wrote me a letter of recommendation for a scholarship, and Dr. Lachney met with me to discuss the requirements for the Texas CPA Exam.
What advice would you give to prospective students considering the program?
I suggest staying organized and communicating with your professors! Also, don't ever feel like it is too late to start/finish your degree. I am finishing my degree later than most. However, LSUA made it so easy for me to finish my degree. From the moment I asked for information to now, I have felt nothing but support and encouragement! So, if you are considering the program, I would say go for it! You will be supported and have all the help you need.
What do you see as the biggest benefits of online education?
I think that the biggest benefit is that it is easy to work on your time. You know what assignments to do each week; most of the time, you'll have the same due dates. And you get to make time within your schedule to complete the work.
I also love the structure of the 7-week courses. It helps to be able to focus on 2 or 3 classes at a time instead of 5 or more classes for a longer period of time.
Is there anything else you want us to know?
I am so happy to have found this program. I am thankful for the LSUA community that has made it so easy for me to achieve my goals! I also cannot wait to start my MBA right away within the LSU community!
