Meet Eric Edwards Jr.
Can you start by introducing yourself and sharing a little about your time at LSU and the sport you played?
My name is Eric Edwards Jr., and I ran track and field at LSU, specializing in the 110m hurdles. Competing for LSU was an incredible experience both challenging and rewarding. I had the opportunity to represent the Tigers at the highest level, and it truly helped shape me as an athlete and as a person.
What inspired you to pursue your degree?
I chose to pursue a degree in Sport Administration because I’ve always wanted to stay connected to athletics beyond my own career. Track has given me so much, and I knew that having a strong educational foundation would open doors for coaching, business opportunities, and leadership roles in sports.
What was the biggest challenge you faced as a student-athlete, and how did you overcome it?
Balancing the demands of training, traveling for competitions, and keeping up with classes was definitely the toughest part. There were times I felt stretched thin, but I learned how to manage my time, stay disciplined, and lean on the support systems LSU provided.
Which professors, courses, or moments during your program had the greatest impact on you?
Several of my sport administration professors made a big impact, but more than anything, it was the moments where classroom lessons connected to real-world sports management that stuck with me. Learning about the behind-the-scenes aspects of athletics gave me a new appreciation for the industry.
How did your academic experience prepare you for your career—whether in your sport, business, or another field?
It gave me the tools to think beyond just competing. While I’m blessed to be running professionally now, my degree has helped me understand branding, networking, and career planning. It’s also prepared me to coach and mentor others with a bigger-picture perspective.
What role did your LSU teammates, coaches, or support systems play in helping you succeed academically?
My teammates and coaches were always supportive of me pursuing my education. They held me accountable not just on the track but also in the classroom. Having a strong support system made the difference when things felt overwhelming.
Looking back, how has completing your degree shaped your personal or professional goals?
Earning my degree gave me a sense of accomplishment beyond sports. It showed me that I can achieve balance and pursue excellence in multiple areas of life. Long term, it’s given me the confidence to explore opportunities in coaching, business, and mentorship.
