Behind every successful healthcare visit is a team of skilled professionals who make sure medical records are accurate, treatments are billed correctly, and providers get paid for their work. One of the most essential (and often overlooked) roles in that process belongs to medical billers and coders.

The online Certificate of Technical Studies in Medical Billing and Coding from LSUE prepares students to enter this field. Instructor Tamika Randolph, who brings more than two decades of experience in medical billing and coding, helps learners translate complex material into real-world understanding. In her spotlight, she shares how she designs hands-on assignments, supports new coders, and inspires students to see themselves thriving in this rewarding career path.

Meet Tamika Randolph

Are there any innovative projects or assignments you’ve developed for your online courses?
I have developed all of the assignments in my online courses. I was tasked with the honor of designing the coursework for diagnostic and procedural coding courses when I joined LSUE in 2021. The assignments are focused on medical billing and coding as well as real-world case abstracting using VLABS from AHIMA. The coursework focuses on understanding accurate code assignments, coding guidelines, understanding what to expect on the job, learning about provider queries, NCCI edits, and outpatient and inpatient coding.

How has your academic journey influenced your approach to online learning?
My academic journey has influenced my approach to online learning in that I believe each student learns differently. There is not a one-size-fits-all approach to education. With coding, there is so much information to learn. I ease the mind of new coders by providing tips for a less complicated learning process. As instructors, we must make an effort to communicate and educate in a variety of ways to be effective.

How do you integrate your academic research or expertise into your online teaching?
I have been in medical billing and coding for over 21 years. I always try to incorporate additional coding tips that help students better understand the academic lessons. I also ask myself key questions such as, “How can I make the lessons relatable? Are the lessons too complex? Are the assignments beneficial to the coders’ overall academic goals?”

Can you describe a time a student’s progress or achievement inspired you?
I am inspired every semester. When we start VLABS, many coders are overwhelmed as the first few assignments can seem intimidating. The best feeling in the world is watching those same students begin to engage and ask in-depth questions after a few weeks of hands-on assignments. That’s the moment you can see the light bulb come on—they’re truly starting to understand the concept.

How do you effectively deliver feedback online?
I consistently send messages, emails, and monitor discussions to address concerns. I also provide detailed feedback when grading assignments to help students deepen their understanding.

Is there anything else you want us to know?
I absolutely love my role here at LSUE. It truly inspires me every day. The staff and students are amazing. One of the best feelings is knowing that I’m part of the beginning of a student’s new coding career. I’m passionate about helping my students succeed—I go out of my way to provide resume tips, interview advice, and insights on what to expect on the job. I also make sure students know that I’m still available after graduation if they need my guidance.
