Student Spotlight: Jessica Levesque Balanced Work & Life with the Online BS in General Studies from LSUS

Jessica Levesque always knew she wanted to make a difference in students’ lives as an educator, but with a full-time job and a family to care for, returning to school felt out of reach. That changed when she discovered LSU Online. Meet Jessica Levesque 

What were your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them? 

Balancing being a mom while having a full-time job and completing my coursework all at the same time was the biggest challenge for me. I often felt like I was being pulled in every direction. I overcame it by creating a schedule that I could stick to, staying organized, and giving myself grace when things didn’t go perfectly. Having supportive professors and a flexible online schedule made it possible to keep moving forward, even when things got tough. 

How has the online learning experience differed from your expectations? 

I expected online learning to feel impersonal, but it’s been quite the opposite. I have built meaningful connections with other students and professors, and the support from LSU Online has been constant. The interactive structure and accessibility of resources made it much easier to stay engaged and motivated than I could have imagined. 

What was your favorite course or topic? Why? 

My favorite course was educational psychology because it gave me insight into how students learn and what influences their behavior in the classroom. What I learned connected directly to how I want to work with students. It showed me the importance of approaching the classroom with both compassion and clarity. 

How did the program prepare you for your career or career advancement? 

This program has given me the academic foundation to pursue a teaching career. The coursework aligned with real-world scenarios I’ll face in the classroom. I also learned how to communicate clearly and effectively, both in writing and speaking, which is key to building relationships with students, parents, and colleagues. 

What advice would you give to prospective students considering the program? 

Just go for it! Don’t let fear or a busy schedule stop you. Online learning makes it possible to achieve your goals at your own pace, with support every step of the way. You’ll be amazed at what you’re capable of when you commit to the journey.  

What do you see as the biggest benefits of an online education? 

Flexibility is the biggest benefit. I could complete my work around my job and other responsibilities. It allowed me to pursue a degree without putting my life on hold. Learning in a digital environment also helped me build tech skills that I know will benefit me in today's fast-paced, tech-driven world.
