Earning a graduate degree is already a challenging goal. However, doing it while living internationally presents even more unique challenges. But for Mary Lawson, an educator and technology coach based in the Netherlands, the online LSU Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) program provided all the support she needed— making this degree a perfect fit.

Meet Mary Lawson

1. What initially made you apply to the online MLIS program at LSU?

When I first began researching MLIS programs, I prioritized finding one that was ALA (American Library Association) accredited, as that was very important to me. Accreditation ensures that the program meets established standards of quality and rigor in library and information science education. Additionally, I needed a fully online program since I am located in the Netherlands and required a university that could accommodate asynchronous, remote learning. LSU met both of these criteria.

2. How do you balance life, work, and studies?

This is something I have been working on for years, even before starting my MLIS! Balancing everything is always an ongoing challenge. Fortunately, the courses are structured in a way that allows me to see major assignment deadlines weeks in advance. This predictability helps me plan ahead, identifying which weeks will be the most open for me to focus on completing the majority of my work. Advanced planning is key to staying on top of my coursework.

3. What is it like being an online international student at LSU?

The interesting thing about living overseas while completing my MLIS is that I still feel connected and supported. When I first joined, I had phone calls and Zoom meetings with people at LSU to help me get oriented with the platforms and ensure I was set up for success. Now that I’ve taken several courses, I’ve had some professors more than once and have shared multiple classes with the same peers. Even though we're online and haven't met in person, these repeated interactions have helped build a sense of community and connection.

4. What are your biggest challenges and how do you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges is managing time effectively, especially when balancing a full-time career, an MLIS program, and personal life. At the start of each semester, it’s important to review the course structure, anticipate busy weeks, and plan ahead. Identifying when major assignments and discussions are due allows me to stay ahead of the workload and avoid feeling overwhelmed. Proactive organization is key to maintaining a manageable balance.

5. Can you share a specific example of how you are applying what you learn?

As an educator and technology coach, I apply what I’m learning in my MLIS program in several ways. My understanding of user needs and information organization helps me design instructional materials and curate digital resources in ways that are accessible and engaging.

6. What do you see as the biggest benefits of online education?

For me, the biggest benefit of pursuing my MLIS online is that it is flexible and that I can work at a pace that suits my schedule. I can also complete coursework from any location, so if I move or if I am traveling, I can still continue my studies.

7. What is your favorite aspect of the program?

My favorite aspect of the MLIS program is exploring and discussing current opportunities and challenges in information science and how librarians are addressing emerging needs. As a massive reader, I am passionate about promoting reading, literacy, and a lifelong love of learning at every opportunity. I love all things related to libraries, from their role in supporting literacy and digital skills to their impact on communities. I find it fascinating to learn about the history of information, technology, and literacy, as well as the evolving roles that libraries continue to play in society.

8. Is there anything else you would like us to know?

I am a certified teacher-librarian, and I was looking to obtain my MLIS from an ALA-accredited university. I chose LSU because it was flexible and fit into my work and life schedule.

I'm originally from Ontario, Canada, and I now live in the Netherlands. I have worked as an educator since 2006, and the most fulfilling portion of my career was as a teacher-librarian. I began my teaching career in Canada and have spent the past sixteen years working as an educator at international schools overseas, including in the United Arab Emirates and the Netherlands.
