Meet Channing Champagne
What initially made you apply to the online Medical Billing and Coding program?
I transitioned into this major due to unforeseen challenges with my previous field of study. However, it has turned out to be a path that aligns well with my interests and goals. I now work in an office where I can expand my learning and achieve my own goals, and I absolutely love the value I bring to their company.
How has the online learning experience differed from your expectations?
My experience with online learning was bittersweet. While I wished I had access to an on-campus tutor near me (Baton Rouge) to guide me through the concepts that I now understand, the internship I was fortunate to take on turned out to be an incredibly valuable experience. It allowed me to make significant strides in my knowledge and skills.
There was quite a lot of information to take in all at once, but it has prepared me for everything I need to know as an entry-level medical biller. My progress was so substantial that the office ultimately appointed me as their primary medical billing specialist. I could not be more grateful for the people I have met and the knowledge I have learned because of the hard work I endured in the Medical Billing and Coding program.
What was your favorite course or topic? Why?
My favorite course topic was, of course, the most difficult—abstracting codes from medical records—but it was fascinating. To me, it's like seeing into the doctor's mind. Learning how to pair the codes wasn't difficult for me, but understanding the "hierarchy" of the codes was the challenge.
I also really enjoyed my Medical Ethics class. It opened my eyes to the "hows" and "whys" of different perspectives in the medical field.
What did you appreciate most about the faculty and support services?
I really appreciate the support I received from both Dr. Sweet and Dr. Massey.
Dr. Sweet is one of the most supportive women I've ever spoken with. Even while handling hundreds of student inquiries, she always provided detailed and thoughtful responses and made sure my questions were answered. She has also followed up with me a few times to hear about my progress even after graduation. I even provided an internship opportunity for a local student on her behalf.
Dr. Massey is also an amazing instructor. I praise the timeliness and clarity of her responses. She helped me when Dr. Sweet was out of the office or whenever I had any general questions about the coding chapters we were actively working through. I can't be thankful enough for her support and integrated knowledge as I was actively working through the program.
How has the program impacted your personal and professional life?
The program overall was a blessing. LSUE was an amazing experience for me, and I always recommend it to my friends. Graduating from the Medical Billing and Coding program has been nothing but spectacular for me. My time is now more valuable. I've been able to spend more time with my family. My work environment brings me nothing but peace. I have also been able to improve myself professionally. I am thankful for the knowledge I learned in the program, my instructors, and my time with LSUE.
Is there anything else you'd like us to know about your journey?
I come from a challenging background with little to no support, but I've always had a strong desire to work in the medical field—just not directly on the front lines. I wasn't aware of this path until my mom suggested I look into it, and I'm so glad she did.
Transitioning into this program was exciting and eye-opening, and I was able to excel right away. Leaving the fast-service industry was a turning point for me. Now, I genuinely love the work I do, the company I work for, and the sense of fulfillment this role provides me.
