Meet Jaclyn Spainhour Tubbs

First off, congratulations on your recent appointment as President and CEO of the Gettysburg Foundation! Can you tell us a little bit about your educational background and what led you to pursue an online Master of Nonprofit Administration (MNPA) from LSU Shreveport?

Thank you! I am honored to have been selected and am looking forward to continuing and adding to the legacy of this hallowed space.

I came to the MNPA program as an adult learner and full-time nonprofit professional. I had previously received a BA and MA in History from Old Dominion University, but felt that while I had the content expertise for my roles as the Director of the Hunter House Victorian Museum and then the President of Historic Congressional Cemetery, I wanted to earn another degree to highlight the skills I learned on the job in these roles as a nonprofit professional. I found the ease of applying for the LSU program and affordability to be a huge plus—and I could do it while I continued to work.

Looking back at your time in the LSUS online MNPA program, were there any specific courses, faculty members, or projects that stand out as particularly impactful?

I can honestly attest that I did not take a single course that was not relevant to the work I do every day. I really enjoyed the disaster response work, as it was not something I was as familiar with, but I also loved being able to complete practical assignments that could be used in my daily work, such as a practice grant or marketing plan. I even tweaked my practice grant and used it as the basis of a successful grant application.

How did you balance life, work, and studies?

A life well lived is one shared with others. I could not do anything I do without the support of my husband, family, friends, and colleagues. They have had such patience with me as I have navigated it all. I also invested in myself and started meeting with a personal coach to help me live with intention and purpose. Good rest and frequent breaks are also necessary.

Can you share a specific example of how you applied what you learned in the program?

I use the knowledge I obtained from the courses on human resources very often in my role as the senior leader of a nonprofit organization. I find myself frequently referring back to my textbooks on planned giving and capital campaigns as well, especially because I had experiences where I was a department of one doing fundraising for the organization.
