Meet Jessica Wilkes

Why did you choose the online LSU Master of Library and Information Science?
I chose the online Master of Library and Information Science program because of its accessibility, credibility, and convenience, combined with the exceptional quality of education it offers. Living overseas in Italy as a military spouse, I needed a program that could accommodate my unique circumstances, as a traditional in-person master’s program wasn’t an option. I was particularly impressed by how the program progresses at a steady and manageable pace while setting achievable goals. Additionally, the support provided by the staff has been immensely helpful.

How did you balance life, work, and studies?
Balancing work, study, and family is a delicate challenge, especially when raising two young children—a 9-year-old son and a 4-year-old daughter. Many times, I’ve found myself typing assignments with one hand while playing Barbies or Dinosaurs with the other. Achieving this balance requires patience and, above all, compromise. I often remind myself to keep promises to my children, even if that means writing papers late at night after their bedtime. However, I also ensure they see the importance of staying on task by demonstrating my commitment to my studies.

Can you share a specific example of how you applied what you learned or how the program prepared you for career advancement?
Although I’m not currently employed in a library system, the LSU program has inspired me to find ways to foster a love of reading in others. I’m developing a virtual volunteer initiative where individuals read to senior citizens. Inspired by a class on conducting patron interviews to recommend tailored materials, volunteers in this program will interview seniors to suggest books based on their preferences.

How has the program impacted your personal and professional life?
The LSU program has significantly impacted my life, allowing me to set an example for my children about perseverance and goal setting. My 9-year-old, in particular, sees the effort I put into my studies, which motivates him to focus on his schoolwork.

What’s it like taking classes while being a military spouse stationed in Italy?
Pursuing my master’s degree while stationed overseas has been both challenging and rewarding. The main difficulty lies in accessing resources, as most library texts here are in Italian—a language I am still learning. This experience has deepened my empathy for individuals in the U.S. who face similar struggles while learning English.

What advice would you give to prospective students considering the program?
The program’s balance of rigor and flexibility reassures me that I’ll graduate fully prepared for a career in the library field. My advice to prospective students is to treat the program as an investment in yourself. Dedicate time to your studies as if they were work hours, but allow flexibility for life’s unpredictability.

What advice would you give to other military spouses considering an online degree from LSU?
For military members and spouses considering LSU’s online program, my biggest advice is: don’t delay. Start now—don’t wait to pursue your goals. The LSU program is designed to work with you, not against you.

How has your career progressed since graduating?
Once we return to the states, we will be stationed at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Washington, where I hope to begin my career as a librarian.
