Meet Jason Yan 

What made you decide to pursue an Online MBA? 

Pursuing my MBA has always been a personal and professional goal of mine. As a Senior Engineering Analyst for the US Navy, I worked on a project that involved analyzing big data and providing meaningful insights. The LSUS MBA with a Data Analytics concentration aligned well with my professional goals and my aspirations to attain my MBA. 

Describe your time during the program. Did you come across any obstacles during your journey? 

The two main obstacles I encountered during my journey were reacclimating myself to the classroom while balancing work, school, and life commitments. I completed my BS in Electrical Engineering from Drexel University in 2001. Being 21 years out of the classroom was an overwhelming feeling, but I had to quickly plan my week with exams, homework, work commitments, and my kids’ baseball and softball practices. Overcoming these obstacles was not an easy task, but I completed my coursework, two classes at a time, and completed the program in 10 months with a 4.0 GPA. 

What was your favorite aspect of the program?

My favorite aspect of the program was rekindling my love for learning through the camaraderie of my fellow students. My MBA journey consisted of learning from some of the best professors in the program (Professors McDaniel, Fawaz, and Ambrosio were my favorites!) and fellow MBA students (Jo Ann, Iman, Ryan, Carlee, and Alurah) whom I can call lifelong friends.

How has earning your MBA impacted your career?

Earning my MBA has positively impacted my career with a salary increase and by opening more doors for future opportunities. More importantly, completing classes such as Organizational Behavior and Leadership Communication helped me become more knowledgeable and equipped to challenge workplace dynamics. 

Do you have any advice that you would like to give to prospective students? 

My advice to new LSUS MBA prospective students: if you’ve been away from the classroom for a while, don’t be afraid to take the plunge back into the academic world. No time is ever the right time; any time is the right time to reinvest in yourself! Do your research before each semester on classes and professors. And don’t be afraid to lean on your fellow MBA students (who are going through the same journey as you) and mentors who want you to succeed!
