Known Issues

Issues and Workarounds

In Moodle 3.7, as with any technology system, issues exist in the software that are not yet resolved. Please find those Known Issues below, along with recommended workarounds. In addition, many tools are integrated into the learning environment—the best browser may vary by tool. Those recommendations can also be found below.

last updated 2/23/2022

What it looks like

H5P activities that are embedded inside other resources or activities are not added to and do not pass grades to the gradebook. The grades are only passed when H5P is added as an external tool.

Solution

Add the H5P activity by clicking “Create learning activity” at the bottom of the Moodle course page. This will add the activity to the gradebook.

What it looks like

Turnitin assignments imported from courses in previous semesters often continue to display the incorrect due date in reminders even though the due date has been successfully updated in the assignment settings.

Solution

It is recommended that imported Turnitin assignments be deleted and those assignments be recreated from scratch following a course restore or import.

What it looks like

Zoom meetings appear in Central (GMT-05:00) Time by default.

Solution

ITS is working with Zoom to resolve the issue. There is a workaround for students in different time zones to employ. This involves the student clicking the Zoom link in the course. Then click the pencil icon next to the time zone at the top of the list. Toggle to edit the time zone. Then click "update," changing the time zone. Please note that TAs or instructors will have to update their time zone each time if they are not in the default Central time zone.

What it looks like

Zoom remains an item in my Moodle gradebook.

Solution

To remove Zoom from your Gradebook, find the Zoom tool in the course. Click the pencil underneath to edit. Click Privacy. Deselect "Accept grades from the tool" and save and return to course.

What it looks like

Unexpected people have access to view my recorded Zoom meetings. This feature was disabled and should no longer be a problem. This would only be for Zoom recordings made prior to 12/15/2020.

Solution

You can check to see who is listed with access by opening a course in Moodle, clicking "Course Tools" on the lower left side of the screen (you may need to scroll down), then clicking "MyMedia" is the center of the new screen. Please click the pencil icon on the right of each video to edit, then scroll under the video to find "Collaboration" in the center of the screen. From here, scroll down and remove anyone you no longer wish to have access to this video with the "x".

Also, avoid recording recurring and personal meeting room content as permissions can get clouded. For meetings that you plan to record that are sensitive in nature, please generate a new meeting ID and passcode for that meeting and consider recording to your own computer rather than the cloud.

What it looks like

Moodle Mail can only send from the user’s email address associated with their Moodle account, which has the @lsu.edu domain. Moodle Mail cannot send from any email address external to @lsu.edu.

Solution

If you wish to send a message from a different email address, add an alternate email address in Moodle Mail. Select the alternate address when you send the message, and it will be sent from no-reply@lsu.edu. If your email client supports reply-to functionality, the recipients can reply to the alternate email address.

What it looks like

There's not a mechanism for Moodle Mail backup/restore. You can set Moodle Mail to send a record of your sent mail to your LSU Mail.

Solution

Moodle Mail currently does not support backing up or restoring message data. Important messaging information in Moodle Mail should be saved by other means.

What it looks like

Students sending you unwanted Messages via Moodle but you cannot switch off Messages from the Messages block itself.

Solution

You can stop students from sending you Moodle Messages by clicking your MyCourses. Clicking Preferences under your name at the top. Select Message Preferences on the far left column. Switch to contacts only. You cannot currently make this switch from the Messages block itself.

What it looks like

Known Moodle Gradebook Issue.

Solution

Assigning custom weights to grade items does not work when creating the item. It is necessary to save the grade item then edit the item to assign a custom weight.

What it looks like

Topic titles will become locked so they cannot be edited.

Solution

To resolve, please clear your browser cache/history or try another browser to successfully edit topic names.

What it looks like

There have been reports of intermittent issues with faculty not being able to add a block when using Firefox.

Solution

Faculty may clear their cache/browser history in Firefox and try again. Alternatively, they may switch to a different browser like Chrome, Edge or Safari. Here are instructions for clearing cache in Firefox.

What it looks like

Failure to clear browser cache on regular basis.

Solution

Users that do not clear their browser cache on a regular basis will intermentally experience artifacts and issues that can be elevated by clearing their browser cache.

What it looks like

Users using legacy devices, will experience longer load times when they have multiple browsers tabs/windows open do to increased load on their local machine. This is especially true when visiting course pages that exceeded the recommended content limits.

Solution

If you are working on a slower/older device using less than 10 browser tabs may improve your page load time and reduce the risk of losing.

What it looks like

3rd party cookie issues impacting all LTIs.

Solution

What it looks like

Customers are going to the old Moodle site to search for current classes.

Solution

Customers need to clear their browser history and cache and type in the new, current URL.

What it looks like

When selecting a student athlete's mentor(s) on a mobile device in a mobile browser, the selected mentor's name(s) do not increment the available count. Furthermore, when adding the selected mentor and the assignment is made, the selected count does not increment. The mentor is assigned to the student athlete correctly.

Solution

None at this time.

What it looks like

Faculty trying to add a Panopto video or students trying to view a Panopto video may receive error message "redirected too many times." This was happening in Edge and Chrome. This should no longer be an issue. If you experience this error, please contact the Faculty Technology Center at ftc@lsu.edu.

Solution

We anticipate this error will have been resolved by a code change within Moodle on July 2. In the meantime, you can switch to Firefox or Safari and make sure 3rd party cookies are enabled on those browsers. What it looks like

When a student completes an activity through the external tool on the Pearson site in less than 6 minutes, an incorrect grade is sent to the Moodle gradebook through auto-sync.

Solution

Make sure students take more than 6 minutes to complete the activity in the Pearson site. This can be done by assigning more complex assessments or including a warning in the assignment instructions.
