Returning to school was a big and deeply personal decision for Sara Yoshica Cooper. Balancing health challenges, life responsibilities, and long-held goals, she chose an online pathway that allowed her to keep moving forward on her own terms. Through the online Bachelor of Science in Psychology from LSUA, Sara discovered new confidence, strengthened skills, and a renewed belief in what’s possible at any stage of life.

Learn more about her story below!

Meet Sara Cooper

Can you introduce yourself—your name, where you’re from, and what program you’ve completed or are currently enrolled in?
Hi! My name is Sara Yoshica Cooper. I am from Paulina, LA (St. James Parish), but I currently reside in Baton Rouge, LA. I completed the BS in Psychology with a concentration in Clinical Psychology and a minor in Business.

Why did you apply to the LSUA online program?
I applied to LSUA’s online program because it was convenient for my lifestyle, allowed me to earn my degree from the comfort of my home, provided a quality education, and was cost-efficient.

What were your biggest challenges, and how did you overcome them?
One of my greatest challenges was going back to school at my age. LSUA has people in place, such as success coaches and academic counselors, to encourage and direct you along the way. They made the process much easier. I also dealt with many health issues throughout my journey, but disability services worked with me, my doctors, and my professors to come up with a plan, according to ADA guidelines, that was feasible for me to continue my studies.

What was your favorite course or topic? Why?
My favorite course ended up being PSYC 4017 - Advanced Research in Psych. Initially, I did not think I would like research, but that class really stretched me and helped me to see what I was capable of. I began to enjoy writing the papers and seeing the finished product of my efforts.

What did you appreciate most about the faculty and support services?
I appreciate that they were understanding, yet fair, while keeping within all guidelines.

How has the program impacted your personal and professional life?
The program has helped to boost my confidence personally and professionally. I made achievements that I had initially cancelled myself out for. Now, I do not mind taking on new challenges.

What skills or knowledge from the program have been most valuable in your journey?
The skill that has been most valuable has been communication. I really did not like speaking in front of people, but now I have more ease and confidence when doing so.

What advice would you give to prospective students considering the program?
Don't wait. The program is challenging yet fun, and you will thank yourself later.

What message do you hope your story sends to others who may feel it’s “too late” to pursue their education?
Too late” is a mindset in this case. When you think it is too late to go back to school, you probably are right on time. Open a new chapter in your life and experience the possibilities. At LSUA, there is no discrimination of age, sex, or race, but rather a desire that all students achieve their dreams.

Is there anything else you want us to know?
My husband and I are a blended family with five (now adult) children. We encouraged all of them to go to college; they did, and they all graduated. I had my hindrances, but it was my time to do something for myself. When the opportunity came, I took a leap of faith. Now I am graduating at the age of 50, having experienced debilitating illness along the way. I can now be an encouragement to others. Overall, I truly thank God for placing me on this path, opening doors for me to walk through, and giving me the strength to finish.
