Meet Ronald Niedrich
Could you tell us about yourself and your background?
My name is Ronald W. Niedrich, and I am a Professor and the Robert S. Greer Chair in Marketing at the E. J. Ourso College of Business, Louisiana State University. I hold a B.S. in Engineering from Clemson University, an MBA from the College of William & Mary, and a Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina.
I’ve been at LSU since 1999, serving as Department Chair since 2013. My research focuses on consumer judgment and decision-making, with work published in leading journals like the Journal of Marketing Research and Journal of Retailing.
What are the biggest challenges and rewards of teaching online?
One of the challenges is maintaining high levels of student engagement in an online environment, where interactions may not come as naturally as they do in face-to-face settings. However, online teaching offers immense rewards, like the flexibility it provides students and the opportunity to incorporate innovative tools like live polling and simulations to enhance learning.
What are some ways you encourage students to collaborate and support each other in an online environment?
I emphasize structured group projects, peer reviews, and discussion forums as key elements of collaboration. These activities not only enhance learning but also foster critical thinking and accountability. Tools like Slack and Google Docs facilitate teamwork, while live virtual sessions provide real-time interaction.

For instance, in discussions about consumer perception, I use research on how framing effects influence consumer decisions. Additionally, I introduce students to AI tools and data-driven decision-making to bridge the gap between theory and practice.
