How Saif Hassan’s Online Environmental Sciences Degree from LSU Helped Earn His Promotion

Meet Saif Hassan 

What initially made you apply to the online environmental sciences program?

I applied to the MS Environmental Sciences program as a way to learn more about something that I am passionate about, in a program with a higher likelihood of being able to work within that field. 

How did you balance life, work, and studies?

I balanced life, work, and studies through aggressive scheduling. I think it is extremely important to be thorough when looking at course syllabi at the outset of classes beginning and plan accordingly. I set aside certain nights, and many weekends, in order to complete my coursework to my standards. That being said, there were still times when I needed to work with my professors, and they were by and large extremely supportive and were open to being flexible with due dates as long as I looked ahead and reached out within a reasonable timeframe. 

What was your favorite course or topic? Why?

My favorite courses in the environmental sciences program were ones that taught us how to use computer programs, such as ArcGIS to analyze, model, or represent data. I think that this skill is extremely valuable when it comes to bridging the gap between “pure” and “applied” science, which is important when considering bringing the knowledge gained in a classroom setting to a job. 

Can you share a specific example of how you applied what you learned?

I now work in groundwater remediation and often use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and pollutant transport phenomena to model the movement of contaminants in groundwater systems. 

How has the program impacted your personal and professional life?

The program has impacted my personal and professional life by allowing me to network with other students in the program and at LSU generally. This has allowed me to keep in contact with people who have similar passions and professional goals as me. 

How has the program helped you achieve your career goals?

The program has impacted my professional life by preparing me to take a step forward in environmental compliance and remediation – while I was in the program, I kept my managers aware of my goals and progress regarding this MS degree. Since the beginning of my time in the program, I have been promoted to a new position in a field better aligned with my interests. 

How do you see yourself using your degree in the future?

I see myself using my degree to continue specializing in environmental or sustainability related fields as I progress in my career.

What skills or knowledge from the program have been most valuable in your job?

Written communication, graphical communication, data analysis, and computer skills have been the most valuable in my job. I would also say that time management and responsibility are universal skills to be gained and upkept through challenging myself as an adult with a family and full-time job.
