From Gridiron to Graduation: A Former NFL Player’s LSU Online Comeback

Meet Anthony Johnson
Anthony Johnson's journey from LSU football star to NFL player and back to LSU graduate is an exciting ride that highlights his dedication, his adaptability, and the lasting impact of good education. His story is a playbook for success that can inspire others—athletes and non-athletes alike— to complete their academic journeys.
Anthony's Early Career
Anthony "Freak" Johnson came onto the scene as a standout defensive tackle for LSU from 2011-2013. His explosive moments on the field caught the attention of NFL scouts and soon led to a professional career. However, like many athletes who leave college early to pursue their dreams, Anthony had unfinished business in Baton Rouge— his degree.
Returning to School
After his time in the NFL, Anthony pivoted back to academics to keep his word to himself, his family, and those he cares about. This shift brought him to LSU's Project Graduation and LSU Online & Continuing Education (LSU Online). Through a combination of these two support systems, Anthony returned to LSU to earn his online Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies. "Choosing LSU Online was the best option for me and my family," Anthony reflects. The program's flexibility allowed him to manage all his commitments while pursuing his degree.
Anthony's "Playbook" for Success with LSU Online:
- Use your resources from LSU Online!
- Take advantage of the built-in support system, including counselors, advisors, and faculty.
- Connect with your Student Success Coaches - Anthony credits Coach Kali Kitsinis for her invaluable support.
Touchdown!
Anthony's graduation is a personal victory and a testament to LSU's commitment to its student-athletes long after they leave campus. He shows current and future students the importance of being a great athlete and finishing a degree.
As a former LSU football player, I recommend any former athlete who wants to come back to school to go through LSU Online.”
