For Lafayette firefighter Clebe Stutes, pursuing higher education was a way to prove himself. After more than 20 years of service with the Lafayette Fire Department, Clebe felt a drive to challenge himself academically and complete something that had long felt unfinished. Balancing his responsibilities as a full-time firefighter, a father of three, and a student, he found the flexibility of LSUE’s online Associate of Applied Science in Fire and Emergency Services to be the perfect fit.

Meet Clebe Stutes

  1. What initially made you apply to the online Associate of Applied Science in Fire and Emergency Services from LSUE?
Pursuing this degree was driven by a deeply personal need to challenge myself and fill a sense of incompleteness I had been carrying. I felt compelled to prove to myself that I possessed the dedication and capability to succeed as a committed student. The journey became about more than just earning a degree; it was about discovering my own potential and resilience.
  2. How has the online learning experience differed from your expectations?
I approached this program without specific expectations beyond ensuring I was thoroughly prepared. My strategy was to complete assignments 2-3 weeks ahead of schedule, which allowed me to stay ahead of deadlines and absorb the material more effectively. The online format proved invaluable—not only for its convenience, but as a genuine opportunity for working professionals and those with scheduling constraints who cannot commit to traditional on-campus attendance.
  3. What was your favorite course or topic? Why?
As the semester begins, I find myself enrolled in Psychology—a course I have been eagerly anticipating. Being my final semester, I truly have saved the best for last. There is something deeply fascinating about the human mind and the intricate ways people respond to different situations. I am excited to explore what drives our behaviors, reactions, and the complex psychology behind human nature.
  4. How did the program prepare you for your career or career advancement?
In this case, I believe my career has uniquely prepared me for this program. My 20 years with the Lafayette Fire Department have instilled in me essential qualities including unwavering discipline, patience under pressure, and the ability to make critical decisions quickly in high-stress situations. These skills, developed through real-world emergency response, have shaped me into someone who can adapt and perform effectively when it matters most.
  5. What advice would you give to prospective students considering the program?
Look, I am a 46-year-old father of three and work a full-time job and if I can do this, anyone can. It does not take superhuman ability, just consistent effort, and genuine commitment. The moment you discover what you are truly capable of when you give something your all, you will realize there are no limits to what you can achieve.
  6. What do you see as the biggest benefits of an online education?
The greatest advantage is undoubtedly the convenience. Having the ability to listen to lectures and complete quizzes from home or during breaks at work has significantly simplified my schedule and made continuing my education much more manageable. I am incredibly grateful that my Fire Training Chief actively supports professional development and consistently encourages our team to pursue college courses that enhance both our knowledge base and practical skills. My hope is that by pursuing this path, I can serve as an inspiration to others and demonstrate that advancing one's education is both achievable and worthwhile, encouraging them to take that important first step in their own educational journey.
