Meet Earvin Hughes

1. What motivated you to pursue your degree through LSU Online & Continuing Education, and how did it compare to traditional, in-person education?
Honestly, it was very challenging for me to obtain an HR job after finishing my undergraduate program at LSU. I really joined the program to give myself more time, to be honest. My initial thought was that an advanced degree would allow me the opportunity to use it as a negotiation tool. That is not true. You have to possess a certain level of experience to be able to leverage the advanced degree. It helped me in the latter part of my career.

2. Can you describe your experience as part of the first graduating cohort for LSU Online & Continuing Education?
I was able to experience in-class instruction before the option was available to complete the LHRD program online. The online program brings a lot more flexibility for a working adult with family obligations. You do have to be more self-driven to keep up with the curriculum. The online program fit my family and working lifestyle better. I also saved a lot of gas money!

3. How did earning your degree online change your personal and professional trajectory?
I was able to dedicate more time to my wife and child because my schedule was open, and I could complete my courses from the comfort of my home. The advanced degree helped me negotiate a higher salary because of my educational background.

4. What are some of the milestones or accomplishments you've achieved since graduating with your degree?
I’ve obtained multiple HR roles in different industries. I was able to grow as a professional, and I’m currently a Specialist in my field.

5. What advice would you give to current or prospective students considering pursuing their degree through LSU Online & Continuing Education?
I would advise them to speak with their employer about their professional development. A lot of companies will reimburse you for obtaining an advanced degree. You have to be self-driven and have some level of organization to keep up with an online program. It really helped my career, and I’m still using some of the knowledge I learned in the program to this day.

6. Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently during your time as an online student?
I would have looked up more scholarships instead of taking out loans.

7. How did the flexibility of online learning help you balance school with work, family, or other commitments?
Online learning is really self-paced. It gives the learner a lot of autonomy to balance other things that are important to them outside of their education.

8. How does it feel to be part of such a significant milestone for LSU Online & Continuing Education, knowing that your graduation helped pave the way for others?
It makes me feel old! But an important element of being impactful is going through your trials and tribulations early so the next generation will have a clearer vision of a brighter future.

9. What are your thoughts on the future of online education and how LSU is leading the way?
I know online learning is here to stay. LSU provided me with a way to gain the same learning experience as an in-class traditional student but still be present to handle the everyday challenges of adulthood. I’m appreciative of the institution for life. GEAUX TIGERS!!
