Become a Leader in Respiratory Care

Expand your career opportunities with LSU Health Shreveport's online Bachelor of Science in Cardiopulmonary Science—a Degree Advancement (DA) Program designed for practicing respiratory therapists. This program builds on your existing knowledge and expertise with a goal “to provide graduates of entry into respiratory care professional practice degree programs with additional knowledge, skills, and attributes in leadership, management, education, research, and/or advanced clinical practice that will enable them to meet their current professional goals and prepare them for practice as advanced degree respiratory therapists” (DA 3.1).

This 30-credit hour degree completion program focuses on developing management, leadership, research, education (teaching), and furtherment of clinical concepts, opening career paths beyond direct patient care into areas like research and education. The attainment of a Bachelor degree also aligns with the American Association for Respiratory Care official position statement that RTs entering into practice in 2030 and thereafter must obtain a minimum of a baccalaureate degree. The LSUHS DA/Online CPS program’s streamlined design allows working professionals to complete the degree quickly with minimal career disruption, empowering experienced RRTs to excel in the evolving respiratory therapy landscape and contribute comprehensively to patient care and beyond.

* A bachelor’s degree requires 120 credit hours. However, the BS in Cardiopulmonary Science is designed specifically for students who hold a CoARC-accredited Associate's degree (e.g., Associate of Science or Applied Science) in Respiratory Therapy and possess a valid RRT credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care. This program provides the final 30 credit hours needed to complete your bachelor’s degree, allowing you to build on your previous education and graduate faster.

*Completion of this program in 10 months is based on an intensive course load, and students are welcome to take up to 24 months to complete.

*The CPS program is competitive, accepting up to 24 new students each calendar year, offering a tailored curriculum designed for the Respiratory Therapist.
