Long before she taught students at LSU, Dr. Holly Peterson developed skills that rarely come from a textbook.

Growing up in Kentucky, she spent her early years riding horses, which helped her develop discipline, focus, and an appreciation for structure and precision. Those qualities would later combine with her graduate education to guide how she teaches and mentors students.

Today, as a faculty member in LSU's online Master of Public Administration (MPA) program, Dr. Peterson brings her intentionality to the classroom, helping students connect theory to practice in ways that resonate in real life.

"I grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, where I learned to ride horses as a child," she shared. "I started college at a community college there before moving to Alabama, where I finished my undergraduate degree, double-majoring in English and Sociology."

Her path into public administration wasn't linear, but that's part of what makes her perspective valuable to students. Before earning her MPA and Ph.D. in public policy, Dr. Peterson gained experience in public affairs and nonprofit healthcare administration, which gave her a firsthand understanding of the challenges students face in their careers.

Why Public Administration Matters

Dr. Peterson’s career path reflects the kind of work the field makes possible. Public administration shapes how communities function, how policies take form, and how organizations deliver services. MPA professionals make decisions that influence healthcare systems, education, infrastructure, and economic development.

An MPA prepares students to thrive as leaders in the public sector. The degree emphasizes a mix of leadership, policy analysis, organizational management, and communication. These skills apply across government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and even private sector roles connected to public service.

Learning That Connects to Real-World Practice

Students in the LSU online Master of Public Administration often bring their own professional experience into the program. Many work in roles where they already face complex challenges. The coursework helps them approach those challenges with greater structure, stronger analytical tools, and a broader perspective.

In online classes, I tie principles from our topic of study to applied contexts and illustrations. Where possible, I incorporate group work so that students have opportunities to think together and co-develop course products."

Learning in an online environment requires intention. Students communicate through written discussions and virtual meetings, which often leads to more thoughtful responses and deeper analysis.

"You have to be clear, direct, and intentional," she said. "That often leads to more meaningful engagement because students are bringing in their own professional experiences."

This dynamic creates a learning environment where theory and practice move together. Students learn concepts and immediately connect them to real-world applications.

Designed to Support Student Success

The flexibility of LSU's online Master of Public Administration program supports professionals balancing education with full-time careers and personal responsibilities. Students stay on track while continuing to work and gain experience.

To supplement the program's flexibility, Dr. Peterson emphasizes a high standard for communication.

"I focus on clear, consistent communication," she said. "I set explicit expectations, provide timely feedback, and make myself accessible through multiple channels so students never feel adrift."

Each course includes defined milestones and regular opportunities for feedback. This structure helps students stay engaged, monitor their progress, and adjust when needed.

The program also encourages students to learn from peers in other industries. These interactions strengthen problem-solving skills and broaden perspectives.

Policy in Action and Research in the Classroom

The program’s focus on practicality extends beyond classroom structure and into the content itself. Dr. Peterson's teaching reflects her research interests, particularly her focus on Gulf Coast policy.

I'm very interested in the policy processes of the Gulf Coast. Not only because I live and work in the area, but also because it is unique in ways that can provide deeper insights for policymaking generally."

The region faces complex challenges across environmental resilience, disaster response, economic development, and public health. These issues require coordinated efforts across agencies and sectors.

By studying real examples, students gain insight into how policy decisions unfold in rapidly changing environments. They learn how to evaluate outcomes, adapt strategies, and lead through uncertainty.

Dr. Peterson also integrates her research into her teaching to make course content reflect current developments in the field.

"I draw on the literature and resources I use for my own research to develop materials that apply to contemporary contexts," she explained. "I share my work, when applicable, to highlight course lessons."

Her approach exposes students to current research while reinforcing how the academic work informs decision-making in the public sector. It helps students understand how to evaluate sources, interpret data, and apply findings in professional settings.

Collaborative Skills That Support Long-Term Success

Students in the MPA program develop skills that directly support leadership and career advancement, including:

  • Analyzing policies and evaluating their impact
  • Leading teams and managing organizational change
  • Communicating with stakeholders across sectors
  • Using data to inform decisions
  • Navigating complex regulatory and administrative systems

These skills prepare students to expand their influence. In fact, Dr. Peterson encourages them to actively apply what they learn within their organizations.

Take advantage of every opportunity to connect what you're learning to real-world public service challenges. The most successful students bring their professional experiences into discussions and apply concepts directly to their work."
