Build the Skills to Understand, Evaluate, and Use AI Responsibly
Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming part of how people work, learn, and find information. Knowing how to use an AI tool is useful but understanding how to evaluate its output and use it responsibly is vital.
To help learners build those skills, LSU has launched the AI Literacy Essentials, a free online course that offers a foundation for understanding artificial intelligence and applying it effectively in everyday life, education, and work. The program, which was developed in partnership with an interdisciplinary team of faculty experts, is available through LSU Online.
"As Louisiana's flagship university, LSU has a responsibility to lead in emerging areas that will shape our state's future," said Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs & Provost Joseph Messina. "AI Literacy Essentials provides broad access to foundational AI education and helps prepare students and citizens alike for the opportunities and challenges ahead."
AI Literacy Goes Beyond Using the Tools
AI Literacy Essentials is designed for beginners and does not require a technical background. Through five self-paced modules, learners explore topics including how AI works and what people should consider when using it.
This free online AI course covers:
- AI foundations: Learn what AI is (and isn't), how large language models generate responses, and where AI already shows up in daily life.
- AI ethics and societal considerations: Examine topics like privacy, bias, and transparency.
- Academic integrity: Learn appropriate uses of AI in coursework and how to cite AI tools.
- Information literacy: Develop skills for verifying AI-generated information and recognizing misinformation, hallucinations, and synthetic media.
- Practical AI skills: Explore prompting fundamentals and ways to use AI productively in learning or work without replacing your essential skills.
The course uses short readings, videos, and self-check activities to help learners build transferable skills they can apply at school, at work, and in everyday situations.
Earn an AI Literacy Essentials Digital Badge
Learners who complete the course will earn the AI Literacy Essentials digital badge as recognition of their engagement with foundational topics in artificial intelligence and responsible AI use. The badge can be added to a LinkedIn profile or resume as a record of participation in LSU’s free online AI course and a starting point for continued learning.
Educators, employers, libraries, and community organizations can also share the course with their audiences or use it to support professional development and conversations about responsible AI use.
