Meet Juan Carlos Escobar

1) What program and school did you graduate from, and what initially made you apply to your program?

I graduated from the Master of Science in Construction Management program at LSU. With a background in civil engineering and several years leading industrial construction projects in the food and beverage industry, I wanted a program that would strengthen my strategic, managerial, and leadership skills. LSU’s reputation and the practical focus of the curriculum made it a natural choice to complement my professional experience.

2) What were your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?

One of my biggest challenges was balancing a demanding full-time role as a Lead Project Manager with the academic workload. Managing active construction projects while meeting assignment deadlines required strong discipline and time management. I overcame this by applying the same planning and scheduling techniques I use in my projects to my studies, setting clear priorities and staying consistent.

Another important challenge was being a foreign student. I had to make an extra effort to adapt, create space for myself within the program, and connect with classmates from different backgrounds and perspectives. Over time, this became a very positive experience, as it allowed me to grow not only academically but also personally, by learning to communicate, collaborate, and integrate into a diverse learning environment.

3) What was your favorite course or topic? Why?

My favorite course was Decision Making for Construction Management (CM 7150) taught by Dr. Erick Vechan. It was the first course I took in the program, and it made a lasting impression on me. I was struck by how deeply our decisions influence the effectiveness of projects and outcomes in construction management. That course helped me realize that everything in life is a decision — and even choosing not to make a decision is, in itself, a decision. This perspective changed the way I approach challenges, plan projects, and lead teams in my professional career.

4) What did you appreciate most about the faculty and support services?

I truly appreciated the overall experience with the faculty and support services at Louisiana State University. The entire process was smooth, well-organized, and very helpful from start to finish. Whenever I needed guidance or assistance, the response was timely and supportive, which made it much easier to stay focused on both my studies and my professional responsibilities.

5) How has the program impacted your personal and professional life?

Professionally, the program strengthened my decision-making, planning, and leadership approach in managing complex construction projects. It has also opened new opportunities in my country and expanded my perspective to think beyond local boundaries, considering the possibility of working worldwide. Personally, it reinforced discipline, resilience, and the importance of continuous learning as part of my growth.

6) What advice would you give to prospective students considering the program?

My advice would be to take the program without hesitation. You learn a great deal along the way, not only academically but also through collaboration and real-world perspectives. You also build meaningful friendships and professional connections that can open opportunities later on. Overall, it is a unique and rewarding experience that goes far beyond the classroom.

7) How do you see yourself using your degree in the future?

I am already applying this degree in my current role at Lacthosa, based in Honduras, where I am leading one of the most important industrial projects in Central America: the development of a new beverage and dairy production facility. The knowledge gained from the program directly supports how I plan, lead, and execute this type of complex project.

Looking ahead, I plan to continue advancing toward managing a Project Management Office (PMO) and contributing at a more strategic level within the organization.

8) What skills or knowledge from the program have been most valuable in your journey?

Risk analysis, scheduling techniques, stakeholder management, cost control, and strategic planning have been the most valuable skills I’ve gained from the program.

9) Is there anything else you want us to know?

This achievement is a very personal milestone for me. I visited Louisiana State University in 2021 after the pandemic, and I was truly amazed by the university and its environment. At that moment, I dreamed of being accepted into the program. Today, seeing that dream fulfilled is incredibly meaningful, and it reminds me how far dedication and perseverance can take you.
