Graduate Spotlight: Monica Kinchen and the MS in Leadership & HR Development

Pursuing a graduate degree was a key step that would align Monica Kinchen’s career goals with her aspiration for leadership and people development. Meet Monica Kinchen 

What program and school did you graduate from, and what initially made you apply to your program? 
I graduated from LSU with a Master of Science in Leadership and Human Resource Development with a concentration in Workforce Development. I chose this program because I wanted a degree that combined leadership, people development, and organizational growth. LSU’s strong reputation and focus on real-world workforce solutions made it the perfect choice for me. 

What were your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them? 
My biggest challenge was balancing school, work, and family responsibilities. I overcame these challenges by staying organized, leaning on my support system, and utilizing the flexibility of LSU Online to complete coursework without sacrificing my education. 

What was your favorite course or topic? Why? 
My favorite course was Workforce Development because it helped me understand how to support individuals professionally while meeting organizational needs. I enjoyed learning how to design programs that improve job skills, engagement, and leadership effectiveness. 

What did you appreciate most about the faculty and support services? 
I appreciated how responsive, supportive, and encouraging the faculty and support services were. Even though the program was online, I always felt connected and guided. The advisors and instructors genuinely wanted students to succeed. 

How has the program impacted your personal and professional life? 
The program strengthened my confidence, expanded my career opportunities, and prepared me for leadership roles in HR and workforce development. Personally, it motivated me to pursue bigger goals and demonstrate determination for my children.

What advice would you give to prospective students considering the program? 
My advice to prospective students is to believe in yourself and trust the process. The program is flexible, supportive, and designed for working adults. Stay organized, communicate with instructors, and stay committed—your future self will thank you. 

How do you see yourself using your degree in the future? 
I see myself using my degree to grow my career in human resources, leadership development, coaching, and workforce training. My goal is to support individuals and organizations by creating programs that help people thrive. 

What skills or knowledge from the program have been most valuable in your journey? 
The most valuable skills I gained include leadership development, communication, problem-solving, and the ability to design and evaluate workforce programs. These skills have prepared me to lead confidently and make a meaningful impact.
