Going back to school after time away can feel intimidating for many, especially after a difficult first experience. However, the right program can make all the difference!

Alejandra Lemus always had the goal of earning a degree, even when life made that path complicated. Years after her first attempt at college, she found a new opportunity through the online Associate of Science from LSU Alexandria (LSUA). Through a flexible program format and strong support, Alejandra gained the tools she needed to take an important step toward her future.

Meet Alejandra Lemus

What program and school did you graduate from, and what initially made you apply to your program?

I graduated from Louisiana State University Alexandria with an online Associate of Science degree.

I have always wanted to attend college and earn a degree. I attempted after high school, but unfortunately, I did not have the best support I needed to succeed. I was commuting long distances–walking over a mile, taking a Bart train for an hour and then a shuttle to campus and back. I was determined to try, using every resource available to me by staying in the library for computer access and seeking help wherever I could. However, I was unable to obtain books, lacked guidance, and ultimately it led me to not be able to receive financial aid.

Over the years, I learned more about myself but never let go of the goal of earning a degree. Life eventually brought me to Louisiana, and finally things felt right to start looking to go back to school. That’s when I found LSUA. It not only gave me an opportunity to finally pursue my education, but it allowed me a chance to do it around my schedule and in the comfort of my own home. A year later, I was able to earn my Associate of Science degree.

What were your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?

My biggest challenges were self-doubt and anxiety about returning to school. I truly put my all in it the last time I tried and the fear of failing kept me from trying again. Once I saw LSUA I thought, “Why not? One year, four years and even ten years down the line, I am going to want to have my degree. That time is going to pass anyway– why not start now?”

Despite all my fears and nerves trying to talk me out from applying, I took the leap. I was still in disbelief that I had applied until I received a phone call for my Enrollment Coach, the wonderful Ms. Malia. From day one, she asked questions, listened to my story, my worries and set clear goals with me. There were constant check-ins and Malia walked me through everything step by step with clarity and care.

The support continued with each of my advisors. Malia, Michelle and Hannah have each taken me through every step of this journey. These women have given support, guidance and pushed me to be my best. LSUA has been such a different experience, I have never met a group of individuals that went beyond their roles that make you feel like you’re speaking to a friend. I was in a better place to get through school, but at LSUA, I found the support I had been missing the first time around. What once felt scary and confusing ended up being the source that contributed to changing my self-doubt to self-confidence.

What was your favorite course or topic? Why?

Oh my, picking a favorite course is extremely difficult to do. Each course has given me an opportunity to grow and expand my worldviews. Sociology was interesting, communications was surprisingly fun, anthropology will always be an area of interest for me, but if I had to choose, I would say psychology and Buddhism. Buddhism pushed me out of my comfort zone, both personally and academically. This course helped me see how complex religion is, the depth that it runs in our lives and gave me a different perspective. Meanwhile, psychology taught me how complex we are as people and the different influences of our lives have on our worldviews. These courses have each broadened my mind, making me excited for new opportunities to learn.

What did you appreciate most about the faculty and support services?

Aside from what I have shared, I appreciate the quick responses and support the faculty has provided. There is always clear communication and quick turnaround. I appreciate Malia as my Enrollment coach, she set the tone to my new start with LSUA. Her positive, supportive and can-do attitude made me want to keep going. Michelle listened and helped me set a clear path to reach my goals. She knew my past and how much I doubted myself, but I will never forget the day she told me I could call her and she will be cheering me on as she brought out some pompoms. Hannah jumped right in at the middle of my journey and quickly made a connection with the same amount of support. She listened, always trying to find ways to find courses I liked while also challenging me. Each one has been quick to respond, follow up and made time to answer any question I had. On top of it all, I appreciate the zoom meetings that are available.

How has the program impacted your personal and professional life?

The program has impacted me personally by helping me gain confidence again. I was shocked at how well I was doing. I knew I could do it, but the program and its staff pushed me to truly give it my all. Professionally, I feel my growing knowledge and skills bring a different outlook to different scenarios. I feel I used to be strict on the written rules, but now I try to see all perspectives and come up with different ways to go about situations.

What advice would you give to prospective students considering the program?

If you want a degree, go back to school. But if you want to better yourself, earn your degree, and grow with the most supportive staff, go to Louisiana State University Alexandria. Whether you are just starting or going back to school, I know it can be scary. From someone who has experienced both, LSUA gives you resources and supportive advisors that will guide you. Fight the fear and jump in, the staff here will catch you.

How do you hope to use your degree in the future?

I hope to use my degree to gain a new job, but I am not stopping here. I hope to keep putting in the work to earn my BS in psychology and kinesiology. I hope to open a physical therapy office that can help veterans and their families.

What skills or knowledge from the program have been most valuable in your journey?

Communication and the desire to keep learning. My perspectives have been challenged, worldviews broadened and knowledge in different topics have grown my confidence. In my journey, my favorite skill I learned was to always have room for the possibility of being wrong. It allows a person to remain open to listen and learn.

Is there anything else you want us to know?

I have had a difficult start when it comes to school, but I am extremely proud of myself for accomplishing my first step. LSUA has been the best turning point for me and I am now looking forward to continuing learning. I felt like I had missed out on school, to study abroad and that I would never reach my goal. Since I started attending, I have conquered my fear of school, had an opportunity to go to Scotland while studying, grew my confidence, been on the Chancellor's list almost every semester, and graduated. I am beyond happy to be here and cannot thank everyone enough.
