Meet Katelyn Bourgeois
What initially made you apply for the online BS in Public Health program?
During my sophomore year, I was interested in changing my major and was introduced to the field of public health by a family member. I continued to do research and decided that this was the perfect fit for me as it allowed me to remain involved in healthcare in a non-clinical capacity. I met with my advisor, who informed me that LSU was creating a new BSPH program. From there, I became a Pre-Public Health major and was accepted to the inaugural cohort.
What was your favorite course or topic? Why?
Public Health Policy and Advocacy was my favorite course because it introduced me to how health policy is implemented. The course taught me how to write an effective policy analysis and brief, a skill I now use as a Health Policy and Systems Management MPH student in my graduate school studies.
How has the program impacted your personal and professional life?
The BSPH program allowed me to explore different aspects of public health through its courses. I was also granted the opportunity to challenge myself by taking on a leadership role as my classmates, and I spearheaded the Undergraduate Association for Public Health Practice. I was also fortunate enough to gain friends within my cohort and build personal relationships.
What are your career goals, and how do you see yourself using your degree in the future?
I am interested in healthcare administration or project/program management. My BSPH degree has equipped me with a robust foundation and skills to strengthen public health programs and health systems. The BSPH program's emphasis on health policy and organizational behavior has honed my analytical and strategic planning skills, essential for managing healthcare programs effectively. This background has prepared me to evaluate health interventions, manage resources, and understand the complexities of healthcare systems.
