Meet Emmanuel Pressley

What program and school did you graduate from, and what initially made you apply to your program?

I earned a Master of Science in Finance from LSU’s E.J. Ourso School of Business. I decided to attain my finance degree because of my background working at the U.S. General Services Administration in civic technology and procurement. A lot of my work dealt with the intersection of public policy, project management, and business operations. It piqued my interest in finance and how to leverage my experience to build on my career.

What were your biggest challenges, and how did you overcome them?
My biggest challenge was the gap between undergrad and graduate school. It had been 10 years since I did technical math or even utilized that portion of my brain to the extent that was required. I decided to take advantage of the supplemental tutorial services from McGraw-Hill and constantly attend my professor’s open office hours to ask for better clarification.

What was your favorite course or topic? Why?
My favorite course was investment analysis and portfolio theory because it connected theory directly to real financial decision-making. I am on track to go into corporate law, and it’s a great foundation for the work I am interested in. Even if you do not work in finance, the knowledge helps you manage your own savings, retirement plans, and long-term investments more prudently.

What did you appreciate most about the faculty and support services?
What I appreciated most about the faculty was their accessibility and real-world experience. Professors were not only knowledgeable in theory, but they also brought practical examples from their professional backgrounds, which made the coursework more meaningful and applicable. They were responsive, supportive, and genuinely invested in student success. Additionally, we had Student Success Coaches who were present and ready to answer questions about financial aid, tutorial services, scheduling classes, and so much more.

How has the program impacted your personal and professional life?
This program has had a significant impact on both my personal and professional development. Professionally, it strengthened my analytical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills, allowing me to approach challenges with more confidence and structure. Personally, the program helped me develop a greater sense of financial confidence.

What advice would you give to prospective students considering the program?
My advice to prospective students is to stay engaged, ask questions, and fully utilize the resources available to you. Time management is critical, so planning ahead and staying organized will make the experience much more manageable. I would also encourage students to actively participate in discussions and network with classmates and faculty, as these connections enhance learning and can be valuable professionally.

How do you see yourself using your degree in the future?
At the moment, I am working in the Bureau of Economic Stability & Benefits at the Department of Employment Services in Washington, D.C., and I will later go into law. I intend to use my degree to advance my profession but also offer services within my church, fraternity, and local board and organizations I am a part of.

What skills or knowledge from the program have been most valuable in your journey?
The most valuable skills and knowledge I gained from the program include critical thinking and strategic analysis. The program also strengthened my ability to evaluate complex problems, analyze data, and develop practical, evidence-based solutions. I am working in government and will soon go into corporate law, and my finance degree has equipped me with the knowledge and skills to succeed.
