Dealing with military service, frequent relocations, and a college education is no small feat, but Casey Brinkley has been doing it well. A current student in the online Bachelor of General Studies program from LSU Shreveport, Casey has pursued his degree while serving in the Army. Through LSU Online, he’s been able to complete assignments from Humvees, patrol bases, and training sites across the country. His determination and adaptability serve as a reminder of how online education can make higher learning possible, no matter the circumstances.

Meet Casey Brinkley

What initially made you apply to the online Bachelor of General Studies?
My original intent was to become a commissioned Officer and branch into Army Aviation. Although my plans shifted over time, pursuing this degree has remained a priority. Now, I plan to leverage my education in my civilian career with FN America.

What were your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?
Time management was a major challenge, but my physical location posed the biggest obstacle. I've completed assignments from the passenger seat of a Humvee, from a range tower during weapons qualification, and even from a patrol base in the woods using my phone’s hotspot. Despite the circumstances, I made it work—earning credits across 11 states: LA, TX, MS, AL, GA, TN, NC, AR, MO, NV, and NM.

How did the program prepare you for your career or career advancement?
There’s not enough space to fully answer that. While some might argue that classes like theater aren’t career relevant, I disagree. It's not always about the material itself, but how you process it and communicate it back. The program sharpened my ability to articulate ideas, think critically, and meet high standards—skills essential in any professional environment.

What did you appreciate most about the faculty and support services?
Their flexibility and understanding were second to none. My schedule has been anything but traditional, and the faculty’s willingness to work with me—despite deployments, training, and military obligations—is a big reason I’ll be walking across the stage in September.

How has the program impacted your personal and professional life?
After barely graduating high school, I doubted I’d ever go to college. I didn’t think I was “smart enough.” But after excelling in the Army’s mentally grueling Pathfinder School, I began to rethink my limits. With a push from my best friend and wife, Heather, I enrolled—and now, I’m about to graduate. This journey has given me a strong sense of accomplishment, self-worth, and confidence to tackle any challenge, both personally and professionally.

What was it like being a student while in the military?
If I had to sum it up in one word: busy. Free time is rare, and sacrifices are constant—but it’s absolutely worth it.

What advice would you give to prospective students or military professionals considering the program?
If you’re on the fence, go for it. Once you get started, it becomes part of your routine. It won’t be easy—but nothing worth having ever is. Set high goals, stay committed, and get after it.
