Panopto Switch Update

Jan. 7, 2022

In an effort to provide a seamless media experience in Moodle, LSU Online & Continuing Education has been working to transition all video assets from Kaltura to Panopto. All Katura MyMedia content has now been migrated to the Panopto site. Faculty should now see a folder containing these converted videos called “Kaltura Content” or “Kaltura Migration” in their personal folder on the Panopto Cloud site.

We have also been converting linked and embedded videos in Moodle from Kaltura to Panopto resources. At this time, we have done the following in Moodle:

  1. Removed the various Kaltura activities from the “Create learning activity” menu
  2. Updated Kaltura resources (added through the activity chooser) in Moodle courses with the corresponding Panopto links
  3. Begun to convert Kaltura embedded videos, which are those videos added through the text editor, with Panopto embedded videos. This process will be completed over the next several weeks.

Currently, instructors should see two items for each Kaltura resource that was previously added through the activity chooser: the old Kaltura resource and the new Panopto link. The new Panopto link is visible to students and designated by a link icon, and the old Kaltura resource is hidden to students:

We ask that faculty check the Panopto links to ensure they are working. If you encounter any issues, please use one of the resources below. Issues may include:

  • A user clicks on a video, but it does not play
  • No Panopto link or video replacement exists in Moodle for a Kaltura link or video
  • Students cannot access a video in a course
  • Instructors cannot find their videos when logging directly into Panopto

There are several resources to help you troubleshoot these and any other issues with course videos. Please see the LSU Online & Continuing Education website for online resources you may access at your own pace. You may also find helpful information in the following GROK articles:

If any of your videos are missing, or you would like help with any video issues, please contact the Faculty Technology Center at ftc@lsu.edu or (225) 578-3375 option 2. You can also attend a virtual walk-in appointment during available hours by going to the LSU Online & Continuing Education Faculty Resources & Support page and clicking the “Moodle Help” button on the right side of the page.

Please remember that no new Kaltura content should be added to Moodle effective immediately. This includes the use of Kaltura desktop clients like Kaltura Capture that create new Kaltura content outside of Moodle.
