Designing and Teaching Accessible Courses

The LSU Online team offers a faculty professional development course titled Designing and Teaching Accessible Courses. This course introduces the core concepts of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and the laws and standards of accessibility in higher education. This course aims to equip participants with the basic guidelines and tools for making course content accessible and universal.

Participants have the flexibility to use this course as a resource, allowing them to browse through the content at their own pace, gaining insights and knowledge on accessibility and UDL. Alternatively, if they are seeking formal recognition of their achievement, they can choose to complete all the activities and assessments to receive a certificate of completion. If they go this route, partcipants can anticipate spending 8 to 12 hours to complete the course.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the fundamental concepts of Universal Design for Learning
  2. Explain the ways in which accessibility, usability, and universal design for learning enhances the student learning experience
  3. Summarize the legal standards that apply to accessibility in online environments
  4. Evaluate course materials for accessibility barriers (e.g. checklists, guidelines, standards, accessibility checker)
  5. Apply accessibility guidelines to accessibility scenarios
  6. Develop an action plan to address accessibility barriers
