Learn Advanced Level Safety Principles

As safety professionals move along in their career path, they are in need of training designed for a high-level safety manager. LSU Professional Development in partnership with the Alliance Safety Council offers the opportunity for safety professionals to participate in the Certificate for Occupational Safety Managers (COSM) program. This advanced-level safety program is offered in five 8-hour modules on-campus or live-online. This unique 40-hour, five-day program is designed to build core competencies in the field of safety management.

Curriculum: Certificate for Occupational Safety Managers (COSM)

This unique certificate program consists of one 40-hour course taken over the course of 5 days. This is broken up into five 8-hour modules:

  • Essentials of Safety Management
  • Strategic Planning & Evaluating for Safety Success
  • Managing Risk & Safety Finances
  • Communicating the Safety Message
  • Injury Management, Incentives & Discipline

These modules are offered on-campus and live-online. In order to receive the COSM industry certificate, you must complete all five modules, turn in all assignments and have a minimum of 2 years of safety, health and environmental work experience.

Learning Outcomes

What will I learn from the Certificate for Occupational Safety Managers (COSM) program?

Students who successfully complete this program will be able to:

  • Develop clear objectives, goals, strategies and measures of integrating health safety and environment into the culture of the organization
  • Create specific methods for promoting occupational health, safety and environmental program initiatives to organizational decision makers by developing and communicating the safety message
  • Understand different aspects of risk and how to effectively manage these risks
